The now generation thinks they discovered something new and it's as old as the day is long... we've been eating local all our lives.   There was no in my day nor were there words like eco-friendly, fair trade or farm to table.  That's ALL we knew -- farm to table.  This is how it went down -- Daddy hunted and fished and put meat on the table.   How more local can you get?   Mama and my Grandmother had the family garden and spent all summer "puttin' up"  so we would have vegetables all winter.  As a child, I'd sit on the sides while Mama and Granny weeded and picked vegetables.  I'd pluck a tomato off the vine, dirt and all, and eat it.   I'm sure that's why I've been so healthy.   McDonalds did not exist and I was better for it.   We had cold frames in the backyard and grew lettuce and winter vegetables.   If a  holiday was coming, we had wild duck and dressing (Yankees call this stuffin) or for Christmas, Grandpa would kill a hog and we'd have fresh ham.   And there was nothing better than Mama's squirrel stew.  My memories are rich with stories like the time Daddy brought home frog legs for Mama to cook.  She didn't know about the nerve that has to be cut before you cook them and so her frog legs went hopping all over the stove.   She banned them forever from the kitchen!   We had chickens out back so we had eggs and when a chicken got too old to lay, my Granny would go out and grab it up by the neck for dinner.  Nothing was more fun than going out hunting with my family for summer wild blackberries for pies and jams.   In the fall, we found wild muscadines (or muskeedines as we called them).     There is NOTHING this generation can teach us old folks about Local Food.   To their surprise, we've been doing it long before they were born... smile.  What has happened is this generation has discovered what their grandparents and possibly parents have known all along... we've been eating local all our lives.   If truth be known, we could tell them a thing or two.  I'll admit, they can do those iPhones... smile.

If you worry about bug killers and your children, check this out.
Use Diatomaceous Earth (food grade DE only) around your home. DE, as it’s known, is a great bug killer that won’t kill you in the process. It’s made from diatoms, tiny coral-like creatures that are crushed (don’t worry, only the shell is used after they are dead). The resulting powder is like tiny shards of glass. It won’t hurt us or our pets (keep it out of your eyes, mouth and nose), but to a bug, it’s deadly. It acts like tiny razor blades, crisscrossing the shell of any invertebrate, causing them to dehydrate. Use it on your floors, brushing it into corners. Put it on your carpet, work it in for a few days, and vacuum up the excess. One application will last for 6 months or so, even with weekly vacuuming. You can also sprinkle it in your yard and around the base of the house.

Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humor out of life,
And to pass it on to other folks.

A  father wanted to read a magazine but was being bothered by his  little girl. She wanted to know what the United States  looked like.  Finally, he tore a sheet out of his new magazine on which was  printed the map of the country. Tearing  it into smalpieces, he gave it to her and said, 'Go into the  other room and see if you can put this together. After  a few minutes, she returned and handed him the map,  correctly  fitted and taped together. The  father was surprised and asked how she had finished so  quickly.. 'Oh,'  she said, 'on the other side of the paper is a picture of  Jesus. When  I got all of Jesus back where He belonged, Then our country just  came together.'

All this time, I thought this was Billy Graham's prayer.  It isn't.
Billy Graham's Prayer for Our Nation

'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your Forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word Says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have Done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We Have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded Laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it Choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable... We have Neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We Have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the Time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.  Search Us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and Set us free.
In Jesus name, amen!' With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and Wholeheartedly become our desire so that we once again can be called 'One Nation under God!'
