The world is getting to be very weird. I can't believe some of the things I read in the paper or hear on TV. Since it's back to school time, I thought I'd share something about the schools in Miami-Dade County. It seems a teacher got her nose out of whack because she was turned down for teaching a Spanish class. Said teacher has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the school board -- She was turned down simply because she CAN'T SPEAK SPANISH. You might want to pause here and re-read the above paragraph again.
The Extended Foreign Language program offers students a full hour per day of Spanish speaking, writing and grammar. Due to some silly policy, you have to speak Spanish to teach it !
Her lawsuit claims that since she is a reading teacher, she is fully qualified. She claims on the basis of her race and national origin, being a non-Hispanic, non-Spanish speaking person, she was denied the position. Could this lawsuit have a sweeping effect on our entire nation for the lingually disabled. Or how about some poor soul who can't play hockey but wants to be on the team? The blind certainly should not be discriminated against if they want to be an airline pilot, don't you think?
My biggest fear is she will win this lawsuit and the children of Miami-Dade will have a teacher teaching them Spanish without being able to speak it.

BACK PACK SAFETY
The American Chiropractic Association offers simple injury-prevention tips parents can share with their children to keep them healthy and pain-free:
Limit a backpack's weight to no more than 5 to 10 percent of the child's body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders by using the straps.
A backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.
Urge your child to wear both of the backpack's straps—not to sling it over one shoulder as is common. Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms as well as low back pain.
To avoid strain when texting on a smartphone, encourage children to bring their arms up in front of their eyes so that they don't need to look down to see the screen. If they do look down, they should tuck in their chin rather than dropping the entire head forward.
Limit a child's screen time, and make sure he or she takes periodic stretch breaks. Kids should balance sedentary screen time with regular physical activity.

MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills is expanding a flour recall issued over a possible link to an E. coli outbreak after four new illnesses were reported. The recall announced Monday covers several varieties of Gold Medal and Signature Kitchens flour produced on certain dates through February 10. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said flour produced at a General Mills plant in Kansas City, Missouri, is a likely source of the outbreak, which so far has sickened 46 people in 21 states. The CDC says 13 have been hospitalized, and one person has developed a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported. General Mills says the illnesses have been connected with consumers who ate or handled uncooked dough or ate uncooked batter made with raw flour.

How to make a fruit glaze
1 can(s) pineapple, chunks, reserve all the juice
1 bunch red seedless grapes
1/2 pt blueberries
1 jar(s) small jar maraschino cherries, drained
any other fruit you would like to add
4 Tbsp sugar
4 tsp cornstarch
4 tsp orange marmalade or apricot preserves
2 tsp lemon juice
1. Drain pineapple, reserve all juice.
2. In a small bowl, combine all your fruit. I always squirt some lemon juice over my bananas before adding so they don't get brown and yucky looking. Set aside.
3. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and reserved pineapple juice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer till thickened. Remove from heat and add the marmalade or preserves and the lemon juice.
4. Let cool for a couple of minutes, then pour the glaze over your fruit and toss gently to coat. Keep in the fridge. It won't last long!!

Before celebrating a baptism, the deacon approached the young father and said solemnly, “Baptism is a serious step. Are you sure you’re prepared for it?”
“I think so,” the man replied. “My wife has made appetizers and we have a caterer coming to provide plenty of cookies and cakes for our guests.”
“I don’t mean that,” the deacon replied. “I mean, are you prepared spiritually?”
“Oh sure,” came the reply. “I’ve got a keg of beer and a case of whiskey.”

Older people do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe.
Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so to do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested.
Researchers say this slowing down it is not the same as cognitive decline.
The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.

All this time, I thought this was Billy Graham's prayer. It isn't.
Billy Graham's Prayer for Our Nation
'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your Forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word Says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have Done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We Have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded Laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it Choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable... We have Neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We Have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's Possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity And pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the Time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search Us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and Set us free.
In Jesus name, amen!' With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and Wholeheartedly become our desire so that we once again can be called 'One Nation under God!'
